This is the sought-after Surf Green one that seems to be sold out everywhere. I’ve done some simple mods and she now oozes that garage rock indie vibe. Great sound for a basic guitar. This guitar has now been sold.

Maybe you’ve seen these Bullet Mustangs for sale around in the £100-£139 bracket and thought ‘Wow, that’s a crazy price for such a cool-looking guitar – I could go for that.” I took the plunge, but erm …

There’s a reason why these are so cheap. They are not so great from the factory, to be honest. But I’ve remedied the shortcomings .

The first thing you notice is that this Squier Bullet Mustang feels like a toy – it’s so light and thin. Skinny neck and a body that’s less than 3.5cm thick. Bear in mind that an Affinity Strat might be just 40mm.

But it plays well. This is the kind of guitar you can swing effortlessly into your lap and twang away. She’s so light.

If you look online, you’ll see people moaning about the tuners. But they are 100% fine with a bit of tightening. It’s other things that may nag you …

Here’s what I had to fix/replace:

#1: Rough frets: Now I’ve dressed them, so the strings glide perfectly.

#2: Awful bridge saddles: They buzzed away like crazy. I’ve replaced them with brass saddles.

#3: Sticky top nut: The action was too high and the strings were getting stuck which was playing havoc with staying in tune. I cut the nut slots correctly. Now all sorted and she’s easy on the fingers.

#4: Poor action: Saddle height was maxed out, so there’s a shim in the neck to get this perfect (and the truss rod adjusted) – for the option to go higher/lower if you want.

#5: Cheap string trees: I wasn’t sure if this was adding to the tuning issues or buzzing. But I’ve replaced these.

Oh, for aesthetics, I’ve swapped the white pickup toggle switch for a funky orange one.

OTHER IMPRESSIONS: She looks amazing. But this isn’t your regular guitar.

Although the length is comparable to a Fender Strat (see comparison photo below), she’s got the lightweight feel of a child’s guitar.

The basswood body is incredibly thin. The C-profile neck is ultra thin also.

But this means she’s super-easy to play. Ideal for beginners, tiny hands – or just something to grab effortlessly.  She’s set up with 10-46 strings

What’s more, the pickups are surprisingly good for a budget guitar.

One downside: She’s got some stress lines into the body finish from the neck pocket, particularly on one side.

This is cosmetic only but annoying nonetheless. I bought her from new and she came like this. The store gave me a small discount, which paid for the saddles and time spent on the mods I’ve done to her.

I’m tempted to keep her but just have too many guitars!

Please note: There is no case with this guitar.
