It’s set up correctly! Factory Squier guitars are often not! The nut on this one was cut very high, so there was no way to get a low action out-of-the-box. Now I’ve cut the nut correctly and she’s super-easy to play.
PICKUPS AND SOUND
Here’s a demo video (by someone else) showing a VM Mustang just like this one — with the Duncan Designed MU-102 single coil pickups and unique on/off switches to create independent and blended sounds.

The Vintage Modified (VM) models aim to combine a vintage feel with some modern features. Let’s look at some pics right away …
NECK
First thing to say is this is a shorter (24”) scale length. That doesn’t mean it looks like a kid’s guitar. In fact, the whole guitar is longer than my Fender Strat.
It’s just that the neck part is slightly shorter and so the fret spacing is slightly narrower. It’s marginal.
She’s got a great vintage-tinted neck, which is really set off by the cool, white-button tuners.
It’s officially a C profile. But I’d label it a ‘chunky C’. Really full in the hand. And it’s got a 95in radius fretboard and Medium Jumbo frets.
I’ve set her up with a nice lowish-medium action (how I like it) but it can go lower if you want. She’s set up with 10-46 strings.
BODY
She’s got a chunky, offset body made from basswood in Sonic Blue. This is probably the lightest shade of Sonic Blue I’ve seen.
The body pairs beautifully with the Tortoiseshell pickguard – a great contrast.
The body has a superficial stress line on one side of the pocket – very normal for Fender guitars with bolt-on necks that have been played. Nothing to worry about.
ANYTHING ELSE TO SAY?
The vintage-style non-locking bridge with floating tremolo is a lovely touch. I’ll include a whammy bar but you can basically just nudge the bridge with the edge of your hand and you’ll get a lovely tremolo effect.
